Biography
Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) was one of the most recognizable and theatrically self-fashioned artists of the twentieth century. Born in Figueres, he trained at Madrid’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where his precocious technical skill quickly distinguished him. In the late 1920s, he aligned himself with the Surrealists in Paris, developing a meticulous, illusionistic style to render dream imagery with startling clarity. Melting clocks, barren plains, and biomorphic forms became hallmarks of his visual language. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, particularly the writings of Sigmund Freud, Dalí described his method as “paranoiac-critical,” a self-induced state meant to access irrational associations and double images.
Beyond painting, Dalí cultivated a multidisciplinary practice that encompassed sculpture, film, fashion, and design, collaborating with figures from Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney, Elsa Schiaparelli to Coco Chanel. His partnership with Gala Dalí, whom he had met in 1929, proved central to both his personal mythology and professional success. In all his artistic endeavors, Dalí remained deeply committed to technical precision, which he sought to reconcile with avant-garde experimentation. By the end of his career, he had secured an enduring place in the history of 20th century art, not only as a leading voice of Surrealism but also as a master of spectacle who blurred the boundaries between art and life. -
